Tatami Beach

This is an interactive piece where large tatami mat blocks can be moved and stacked. The colorful tatami matting, inspired by the seaside, evokes memories of building castles and tunnels in the sand. While tatami is a traditional Japanese cultural element, it has become no longer essential in residential spaces. Since the perception of tatami and Japanese-style rooms varies across generations, this work attempts to bridge the gap between generations through the experience of the piece. Set in the public space of the Nakano New Word Office, it serves as a reminder of each individual’s living space.
