My Room
My Room is an immersive installation artwork. Viewers move through a series of 4.5-mat rooms, and with each threshold crossed, they enter a progressively smaller room. Not only does the overall size of the room shrink, but the shoji screens and tatami mats also scale down accordingly. In the innermost, fourth room, the ceiling becomes so low that it touches the viewer’s head, leaving barely any space to move.
In the past, She created works using models and figurines. She found a sense of comfort in the tabletop scale, perhaps because of her love for anime and manga. As She began to incorporate my own home and room into her artwork, however, She noticed that the model size allowed me to observe from a distant, detached perspective. She realized that to convey my own reality, a life-size scale was necessary. By linking the life-size 4.5-mat room where She live with the model-sized room, She attempted to bridge the gap between my physical experience and the detached, bird’s-eye view of the model.
